"Over 65, if you're healthy enough to do what we're doing, it is the age of gratitude,” Baur says. "You are so grateful that you can still do this. You're just grateful anyway, grateful for the trees and grateful for clean water."
She admits that the group’s name wasn't initially a conscious choice, she now believes that the "old lady" identity is a crucial part of what the group is about.
She notes that "women over 65 tend to feel the constriction of aging. They lose power and social standing”. Part of the goal of OLAUG is to demonstrate that older women, working as a team, can do a lot more than people might think. In fact, they can do anything.
With age comes wisdom... a perspective earned and reserved for those who can discern it. This wisdom drives the gentle genius behind OLAUG’s mission - to remove trash from ponds while channeling the strength of older women. What started as one woman’s morning swim in a dark littered pond on Cape Cod in Masachusetts has become an inspiration, a community and - yes, it’s a movement. Grounded in the belief that aligning themselves with nature is the most effective way to care for it, this glowing and dedicated group of women ages 65-85 know that action is needed and that joy is too. Together, they have created a community focused on local pond activism and joy.
